Food-borne norovirus-outbreak at a military base, Germany, 2009

BACKGROUND Norovirus is often transmitted from person-to-person. Transmission may also be food-borne, but only few norovirus outbreak investigations have identified food items as likely vehicles of norovirus transmission through an analytical epidemiological study.During 7-9 January, 2009, 36 persons at a military base in Germany fell ill with acute gastroenteritis. Food from the military base'...

Norovirus gastroenteritis in immunocompromised patients.

Copyright © 2012 Massachusetts Medical Society. Infectious gastroenteritis is a common, acute illness that is characteristically self-limiting, but it can become debilitating and life-threatening in immunocompromised patients.1 Noroviruses are major pathogens among the microbes associated with gastroenteritis in both immunocompetent and immunocompromised hosts1-4 (Table 1). In the United States...

Infectious Gastroenteritis and Colitis

In this chapter, we discuss the epidemiology, etiology, presentation, diagnosis, and treatment of infectious diarrhea in immunocompetent persons. The features of small intestinal and ileocolonic disease as related to possible causative agents are presented. Additionally, there is an emphasis on specific pathogens, with a comprehensive review of viral, bacterial, and parasitic causes of diarrhea...

Norovirus Gastroenteritis, Carbohydrate Receptors, and Animal Models

Noroviruses, an important cause of acute gastroenteritis in humans, have been found to recognize the histo-blood group antigens (HBGAs) as receptors. Different noroviruses revealed different receptor-binding profiles associated with the ABO, secretor, and Lewis HBGA types. Direct evidence of HBGA receptor recognition in viral infection and tropism was obtained from human volunteer challenge stu...

Fecal Viral Load and Norovirus-associated Gastroenteritis

We report the median cDNA viral load of norovirus genogroup II is >100-fold higher than that of genogroup I in the fecal specimens of patients with norovirus-associated gastroenteritis. We speculate that increased cDNA viral load accounts for the higher transmissibility of genogroup II strains through the fecal-oral route.
